The Quarterback Tiers Entering 2026

qb tiers cover pocket collapsing night mist

Every offseason ranking of the league’s 32 starters collapses into the same argument: tiers, not ordinals. Here is the board entering 2026 — five tiers, built from consensus league rankings and the efficiency data underneath them.

Tier 1 — The franchise answers

Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow headline virtually every credible board. Allen’s negative-play mitigation gives him the rare combination of highest floor and highest ceiling; Jackson owns two MVPs and the league’s best dual-threat efficiency profile even after a down-by-his-standards 2025; Burrow remains the safest bet for error-free, high-level processing when protected.

Tier 1b — The question marks with rings and résumés

Patrick Mahomes returns from an ACL tear and a statistical dip, and not one evaluator doubts the talent — only the timeline. Drake Maye crashed the party at 23: an MVP-caliber season and a Super Bowl LX start put him top-five on multiple boards, with skeptics noting his 2025 schedule ranked among the league’s softest. Both are one healthy autumn from Tier 1.

Tier 2 — High-end starters chasing entry

Jayden Daniels, a conference-title-game quarterback in his rookie year, sits around the league’s top dozen with elite rushing value. C.J. Stroud hovers in the mid-teens — still young, still armed, but yet to recapture his rookie efficiency. This tier wins you playoff games; it has not yet proven it wins you Februarys.

Tier 3 — The proven middle class

Veterans with long track records and newer starters with two good seasons populate the league’s broad middle. The data point that defines the tier: their EPA per play swings more with supporting cast than any group above them. Scheme, offensive line and receiver quality decide whether they look like top-ten players or replacement candidates.

Tier 4 and the rookies — Variance on purpose

At the bottom of the board sit the bridges and the bets — none bigger than No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman winner installed as the Raiders’ day-one starter. League evaluators grade rookie quarterbacks on trajectory, not raw output: history says even great careers usually begin below league-average efficiency. The tier list is a snapshot; September starts the re-sort.
