What Is xG? The Stat That Explains the World Cup

Expected goals — xG — measures the quality of every shot a team takes, and it will sit in the corner of every World Cup broadcast graphic this summer. Here is how to read it like a professional analyst.

The definition, in one sentence

An xG value is the historical probability that a shot from that exact situation becomes a goal — a tap-in from six yards might carry 0.6 xG, a hopeful hit from 30 yards perhaps 0.03.

How the number is built

Models are trained on hundreds of thousands of real shots, weighing distance, angle, body part, the type of pass that arrived before the shot, and how much pressure surrounded the shooter. Add a match’s shots together and you get team xG — a cleaner read on who created what than the scoreline itself.

Reading a World Cup match through xG

Group-stage soccer is exactly where xG earns its keep. A team that wins 1-0 while conceding 2.5 xG is living dangerously, whatever the table says; a side that loses while posting 2.0 xG against 0.5 is usually fine. Across only three group games, luck can hide a lot — the underlying numbers hide much less. Most public dashboards, including the models popularized by Opta, publish match xG within minutes of the final whistle.

What xG gets wrong

It says nothing about the shots a team chose not to take, it treats a rebound chaos sequence as separate events, and across a single knockout match it can simply lose to variance — which is, of course, why we watch. Use it as a lens, not a verdict.
