Twenty-two finals have decided the World Cup since 1930 — from a half-built stadium in Montevideo to a seven-goal epic in Lusail. Here is every one of them, with the stories and the scorelines in a single table.

The foundations: 1930–1970

Uruguay won the first final 4–2 over Argentina in 1930, then broke a nation’s heart twenty years later: the 1950 “final” was technically the deciding match of a final group, and Uruguay’s 2–1 comeback over Brazil before an estimated 200,000 at the Maracanã remains the loudest silence in sport. The era also gave us the Miracle of Bern — West Germany 3–2 over Ferenc Puskás’ supposedly unbeatable Hungary in 1954 — and a 17-year-old Pelé scoring twice in the 1958 final.

“They think it’s all over… it is now.”

Kenneth Wolstenholme, BBC commentary, as Geoff Hurst completed the only final hat-trick of the 20th century — England 4–2 West Germany, 1966

Total football to Ronaldo: 1974–2002

The Netherlands lost two straight finals playing the most influential football of the decade — to West Germany in 1974 after taking the lead from a first-minute penalty, and to Argentina in 1978. The pendulum swung defensive: 1990 produced a grim 1–0, and 1994 the first 0–0, settled when Roberto Baggio sent his penalty over the bar. France’s 3–0 in 1998 was built on Zinedine Zidane’s two headers and a suffocating midfield, and 2002 closed the era with redemption — Ronaldo, two years after collapsing before the 1998 final, scoring both goals against Germany.

Seven of the last eight finals needed extra time, penalties or four-plus goals to be settled.

The modern era: 2006–2022

Recent finals split into two types: low-scoring chess matches decided by a single moment of efficiency — Andrés Iniesta in the 116th minute in 2010, Mario Götze in the 113th in 2014 — and open classics. France beat Croatia 4–2 in 2018, the highest-scoring final since 1966, and then lost the greatest of them all: Argentina 3–3 France in 2022, Kylian Mbappé matching Hurst’s hat-trick and still finishing on the losing side as Lionel Messi’s side held its nerve from the spot. Official records for every final sit in FIFA’s tournament archive.

*The 1950 decider was the final match of a round-robin final group, not a knockout final — the only edition decided that way. On July 19, 2026, MetLife Stadium adds line 23 to this table.
